JRock (ABM) vs JSmooth (MGF) KOD LA 2012

Good battle although I would have liked longer rounds.

Popping.

I started popping when I was 14-years-old, and then I stopped practicing to start bboying in high school. However, I feel as if I’ve always had a better grasp over popping. I’m 19 now, and this winter break, I want to get back into popping. I occasionally dance from time to time, but I never practice like I used to.

It feels good to simply let go and dance, but I want to share something with you guys. Maybe I’ll record and post some videos of me dancing this December. It’s not going to be anything amazing. My hits are going to be weak, my body is going to be stiff, and everything else is not going to be clean as it used to be, but I don’t know…

I want to go back to dance that started it all for me.

I’m not going to front, I’m a bit camera shy. Not to mention, I’m such a perfectionist that I’m actually reluctant to post any videos. However, if do I go through with this, it will almost be as if I’m starting off fresh. So the question is: would anybody be interested in seeing my progress?

So I found this video on YouTube today called “Dance off: Breakers vs. Math Teacher.” Immediately, I thought one of my high school math teacher who is also a dancer. Despite his age, he is an active dancer in the Bay Area scene. You will definitely see him at jams and cyphers! It turns out that this video with over 71,000 views is of him.

Anyway, I remember he told me that the dance he does is similar to locking and popping. (Yes, I’m talking about both dances!) However, back in the day, they called it “cutting up.” The most amazing part of watching him dance is the natural fluidity of his movements. He is doing what most young dancers do not do… Dance.

It’s inspiring to see that he continues to do what he does, no matter what. Much love and respect to you, Mr. Predovic.

Also, much respect to all bboys (including the ones who threw down in this cyhper), because it’s all love. Nobody “served” anybody.

JRock (ABM) Styles Upon Styles

I’m not a big fan of JRock, but I can’t deny that he’s a great popper. Boogaloo and puppet are on point!

“Moments in Love”

I’m not a big fan of most tutting choreography, but there’s no going wrong with Devious and Moments in Love.

U-Min - Time Machine

U-Min does again. This performance is absolutely beautiful. I also how appreciate how this Japanese dance show does not ruin the performance with poor angles and choppy clips.

Jon Boogz vs. JRock

Tension is high, but this is a great battle. Poppers need to cool it with the shit talking though. Let your dance do the talking. I respect Jon Boogz for that.

“Dance to express, not impress.”

I don’t mean for this post to be offensive, rather food for the thought. However, I think this is by far the worst dance quote I’ve ever heard. What does it mean to “express yourself?” I would define it as representing yourself—translating your character and your emotions into the dance.

This is practically impossible on a beginner level. For instance, if you’re a beginner bboy, and you dance using fundamental moves, can you honestly say that you’re expressing yourself? No, you would lack the experience to differentiate yourself from other bboys. Furthermore, you don’t convey any underlying emotions behind your dance. You’re simply dancing on the most basic level. I’m not saying that it’s inadequate, because everyone starts somewhere. I’m suggesting the notion that to truly express yourself through dance requires originality…and years of practice.

Here’s another thought: suppose I’m overwhelmed with depression and I step into a cypher. I begin to cry and roll on the floor rhythmically to the music. Am I dancing? If you define dancing as rhythmically moving one’s body to music, then yes. Am I expressing myself? If you define expression as setting forth an idea or emotion, then yes. Am I impressing anyone? Absolutely not.

Expressing yourself without presenting it in a form that is appealing to others is insignificant. It contributes nothing to the dance. We as dancers continually dance to impress others—be it audiences, judges, or peers. The “impress” aspect of dance is what allows us to evolve.

With that said, a real dancer can dance to express and impress.
